Honey Onion Cough Remedy that never fails

Home Made Cough Syrup

Works well for most coughs.

Quick and easy to make, but needs to sit overnight before it is ready to use.

Lasts a month or more in the refrigerator.

Tastes ok, though with an onion flavor.

This home made cough syrup works not only for coughs, but my husband likes it to help with a cold as well.

Like so many whole foods, raw honey and the juice of raw onion both have properties that help us to heal. This recipe uses the honey to draw the good medicine out of the onion to make a syrup. Then you remove the onion pieces.

Some kids may not like this, but it is so easy to make that you don't have to invest much time to find out if yours will like it.

Recipe ingredients:
One medium sized yellow onion
One or two cups of raw, unfiltered honey.
The amount of honey you will need depends on the size of your onion.

In a pinch you can use the cooked honey that is what most grocery stores sell, but the cooking destroys some of the healing properties of the honey.
A glass container with a water tight, screw lid to hold the mix, like a mason jar. (Do not use plastic.)

Here is the recipe:
Thinly slice a medium yellow onion.
Lay the slices in the glass jar.
Pour or spoon the honey over it a few times until you have loosely placed all the onion into the container.
Fill the container with honey up to the level of the onion or a little higher.
You will see that the onions actually shrink as their juices are drawn into the honey. After it sits overnight )or about 8 hours) strain out the onion pieces CAREFULLY. The onions will tend to stay clumped together.
Makes about one cup of syrup.

Storage:
My experience is that it lasts at least a month if kept in the refrigerator.

Dosage:
Take as often as you wish. A spoonful once every hour is not too much. There is no drug here, just healing elements of nature that people have lived with safely for years.

However, there is a lot of sugar in it, and sweet things can interfere with your immune system. Not what you want when you are sick. So take it only as needed.

If you use it before bed, remember to rinse out your mouth afterwards to remove the sugar from your teeth, perhaps using the salt water gargle.
Lemon tea with a dash of ginger may prove to be one of the easiest home based remedies for curing prolonged spells of cough. The medicinal properties of ginger suppress various respiratory ailments like common cough and cold. With its soothing element, it helps to keep the body well hydrated which acts as an antidote to coughing. The ascorbic acid contained in lemon helps to neutralize the phlegm content of coughing. The tea leaves may be boiled with juice of grated ginger being added to it. Thereafter juice of lime may be added on to it to be sipped piping hot.
  • Honey with its analgesic (pain killing) properties is also known since time immemorial for its soothingly refreshing effects on patients down with cough. One tea spoon of honey may be added to any hot beverage like tea or milk to be drunk at regular intervals. But honey works wonders if blended with hot water and lemon. Lemon juice may be mixed with honey in proportion of one is to two. The resulting mixture may be mixed with little hot water so that you can have one to two tea spoons of it at least after every hour. The resulting mixture will not only help clear mucus but it will also keep your throat well soothed.
  • Honey acts as a topical anti biotic suppressing the bacterial causes of cough. If one is prone to the disgusting phenomena of night coughing two tea spoons of raw honey taken after dinner will work significantly towards reducing cough.
  • A spoonful of natural honey may be enriched with black pepper to be had twice a day.
  • If you are unable to take raw honey, you may add two spoons of it to a glass of carrot juice. Dilute the juice of four to five carrots with water. Drink the concoction at least thrice a day to soothe yourself from cough.
